Whilst still at university he worked for them on a freelance basis, before becoming a news trainee, a regional journalist and TV reporter in Northern Ireland, a TV reporter on the Breakfast News, a regular presenter on the World News channel and finally a news correspondent for BBC News.
In 2004 he joined 'Big Four' accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP as a senior consultant leading on public sector communication.
