IREX Europe is the European arm of the International Research and Exchanges Board, a US non-profit organisation "specialising in education, independent media, Internet development, and civil society programmes in the United States, Europe, Eurasia, Africa, the Near East, and Asia"[1].
According to the organisation's mission statement; "IREX Europe assists in the development of nations and peoples by providing services, programs, infrastructure and technologies that strengthen civil society, independent media, education and the functioning of democracy"[2].
In Iraq, IREX Europe is working in partnership with the BBC World Service Trust and Albany Associates to build a professional code of conduct and regulatory framework for Iraqi media[3].
IREX Europe is also involved in a project run by the UN Democracy Fund where it is Building a Sustainable Independent Nationwide News Agency for Iraq to "increase the scope of professional and objective news coverage supplied by the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) to media outlets"[4]. The project will "open seven new bureaus across the country, expanding its regional coverage and improving its services to customers en route to commercial viability"[5].
