Robert Goodwill

Robert Goodwill is a member of parliament (MP) for the UK Conservative Party[1] who has represented the constituency of Scarborough & Whitby since 2005. He has been a junior minister at the Department for Transport since 2013.

Parliamentary career

Goodwill was elected to parliament in the May 2005 general election with a majority of 1,245 votes.

He was appointed shadow minister for transport on 6 July 2007.[2]

When the Conservatives entered government in 2010, Goodwill was apppointed assistant whip, and was promoted to whip in 2012.

In 2013 he became parliamentary under-secretary (Department for Transport)[3] a role he retained after the May 2015 general election reshuffle. [4]

Goodwill retained his seat as an MP for a third term in 2015 with a majority of 6,200. [5]

He was appointed Minister of State for the Department of Transport in December 2015. [6]

Goodwill's constituency includes eight oil and gas oil and gas licence blocks, awarded by the Oil and Gas Authority under the 14th licensing round in 2015. For of these were awarded to Cuadrilla, two to Third Energy, one to INEOS and one to Egdon. There are plans for one shale well and to conduct 2D and 3D seismic surveying, but no active applications are currently underway. [7]

Voting record

Goodwill has voted both for and against increasing regulations on fracking. [8]

  • 26 January 2015: voted against making fracking companies apply for an environmental permit before conducting exploratory drilling. He voted against an amendment to the Infrastructure Bill to include an 18 month moratorium on fracking.
  • 11 February 2015: voted in favour of requiring more pre-conditions for where fracking can take place.
  • 16 December 2015: voted in favour of weakening regulations on fracking in protected areas and national parks.

Staff

Outside interests

Robert Goodwill is a managing director and has controlling interest in Mowthorpe (UK) Ltd. The company operates a green/woodland cemetery on land which was previously part of Southwood Farm, Terrington, in North Yorkshire.[10]

Mowthorpe Garden of Rest is part of the 250-acre Southwood farm at Terrington where the Goodwill family have lived since before 1850.[11]
