It was an academic activity at that time, but the first commercial shale gas wells in Europe were drilled in northern Spain in the 1950s. My view is that the evidence to date shows that shale gas can be accessed safely, if operations are done to a high standard and with effective regulation. That is backed up by a growing library of research from reputable expert organisations, such as the [[Royal Society]], the [[International Energy Agency]], the [[Royal Academy of Engineering]], and others. The weight of evidence so far shows that unconventional gas can be developed safely, with effective regulation.

Dan Byles

Dan Byles was the UK Conservative MP for North Warwickshire from 2010 to 2015 and a former member of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee.[1]

He announced he would step down from his seat at the 2015 general election to 'move on to new challenges' and was replaced by Craig Tracey.[2][3]

Fracking

FrackWell.png This article is part of the Spinwatch Fracking Portal and project

Byles was chair of the UK All Party Parliamentary Group on Unconventional Oil and Gas from 2013 until April 2015.[4]

At a conference in July 2013, Byles warned that the issue of compensation for communities affected by fracking could be divisive, the Telegraph reported:

"Generating the money for the local community is the easy bit - the hard bit is defining who is the local community, who actually should be benefiting? There is a danger if you say, 'You are 7km away from a pad but a lateral fracture is going to come under your home, so we need to compensate you', that is feeding the myth that you are going to even notice or be affected by the fact this is coming under you.[5]

Several weeks later in a House of Commons debate Byles said:

“Unconventional gas” — that is what we call shale gas, which is a bit of a misnomer, because it really is just gas. It is the same gas that we use to heat 83% of our homes and to generate 30% to 40% of our electricity.
Accessing gas from shale rock is not new. My right hon. Friend the Member for Hitchin and Harpenden (Mr Lilley) said that gas has been hydraulically fracked in the US since 1949, but he may not be aware that the first exploratory shale gas well drilled in the UK was in 1875, in Netherfield in the south of England. It was an academic activity at that time, but the first commercial shale gas wells in Europe were drilled in northern Spain in the 1950s. Hydraulic fracturing itself is not a new or an unknown process, as my right hon. Friend has already said.
I want there to be a calm debate about this subject, informed by the evidence. Sadly, there is too much rhetoric around the entire shale gas debate, often—it has to be said—on both sides of the debate. Whenever anybody uses the phrase “shale gas bonanza”, I cringe as well. My view is that the evidence to date shows that shale gas can be accessed safely, if operations are done to a high standard and with effective regulation. That is backed up by a growing library of research from reputable expert organisations, such as the Royal Society, the International Energy Agency, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and others. The weight of evidence so far shows that unconventional gas can be developed safely, with effective regulation.
