The Bernard Lewis Family Charitable Trust donated £25,000 to the Centre for Social Cohesion in 2009 as well as donating £15,000 to Policy Exchange.[1]
Founded in 2008, this trust is controlled by the hugely wealthy Lewis family, best known as the owners of the River Island clothing stores. The family’s assets are held by the Lewis Trust Group, which is controlled by an offshore company registered in the Cayman Islands.
The Group also owns the investment company Cavendish Asset Management and has property holdings worth over £1 billion[2] including 13 hotels in Israel and three in the United States.[3]
According to Electoral Commission records, the Lewis Trust Group has donated a total of £52,000 to the Conservative Party whilst the head of the family, Bernard Lewis, has personally donated £40,000. Bernard Lewis chairs the Bernard Lewis Family Charitable Trust, which according to its latest accounts controls funds just short of £5 million. [4]
An affiliated family trust, the Catherine Lewis Foundation, which has funded Civitas, also donated £25,000 to the Traditional Alternatives Foundation in 2008/9.[5]
