Professor The Rt Hon. Sir David Alexander Ogilvy Edward, KCMG, QC, FRSE (born 14 November 1934) is a Scottish lawyer and academic and sat as a Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Communities between 1992 and 2004.
Edward read Classics at Oxford and Law at Edinburgh University. After National Service in the Royal Navy he was called to the Scottish Bar in 1962 and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1974. Before his appointment to the European Court, he was Salvesen Professor of European Institutions at the University of Edinburgh and a Judge of the European Court of First Instance. He appeared as counsel in a number of high profile cases in the Scottish courts, the House of Lords and the European Court. He is a Vice-President of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, and has written extensively on a range of legal issues. He is a past President of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe [1]
Sir David was knighted (KCMG) in 2004, having been awarded the CMG in 1981. In December 2005 he was sworn of the Privy Council. He now sits as a temporary judge of the Court of Session in Scotland, hearing civil appeals. He is the Chairman of the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland and of the Scottish Council of Independent Schools (SCIS). He is an Honorary Fellow of University College, Oxford and an Honorary Bencher of Gray's Inn. At Edinburgh University he is an Honorary Professor in its School of Law and Chairman of its Europa Institute. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and in 2005 received the Society's Royal Gold Medal.
