Professor [[Joan Stringer]] was elected Convener of [[SCVO]] from 1 January 2002. She took up the post of Principal & Vice-Chancellor of [[Napier University]] in January 2003. Prior to her appointment she was Principal and Vice-Patron of [[Queen Margaret University College]], Edinburgh. Professor Stringer has been a member of, or appointed to a range of external organisations including: the Scottish Committee of the National (UK) Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education (the [[Dearing Committee]] 1996-1997); the first such enquiry into higher education since the 1960s, the Dearing Committee reported in July 1997 on the shape, structure, purpose, size and funding of higher education in the UK for the next 20 years; Consultative Steering Group on the Scottish Parliament, chaired by the Scottish Minister for Home Affairs and Devolution. The main report was issued in December 1998 and set out the rules and procedures governing the operation on the Parliament; Commissioner with the [[Equal Opportunities Commission]] for Great Britain; special responsibility as Commission for Scotland (1995 – 2001).
