The Karimia Institute is a Nottingham-based organisation, located in the Bobbersmill Community Centre, that is focused on encouraging and promoting ‘moral, social and spiritual development through worship, education and recreation’[1].
The Director of the institute is Musharraf Hussain al-Azhari, an advisor to the Quilliam Foundation.
The Karimia Institute hosts ‘two mosques in Nottingham, two Ofsted-registered nurseries, an independent faith school, community centre and community radio station’, known as Radio Dawn.[2]
Preventing Violent Extremism
The Karimia Institute is party to the preventing violent extremism agenda and is in receipt of £100,000 of Prevent Funding under the Community Leadership Fund for the years 2009/10[3] and 2010/11[4]
The Karimia Institute is also in receipt of Prevent Funding under the Challenge and Innovation Fund and the Preventing Violent Extremism Pathfinder Fund. These channels have directed funding toward the Bobbersmill Community Centre (where the offices of Karimia Institute are based), National Centre for Citizenship and the Law and Radio Dawn (also located in Bobbersmill Community Centre), which totals to £53,228.50.[5]
Breakdown of Prevent Funding
The funding under the Challenge and Innovation Fund is given to the National Centre for Citizenship and the Law which equals to £37,594.00,[6] a quantity of which is used in conjuction with the Karimia Institute for Preventing Violent Extremism workshops aimed at boys from the age of 10-14.[7]
