Hatzola Northwest Trust Limited (company number 14635020), operating as Hatzola Northwest (charity number 1041441), is a British Jewish volunteer emergency medical service based in Golders Green, North West London.[1][2]
It provides free, 24/7 pre-hospital emergency medical response and patient transport within a 2.5-mile radius of its base, serving the local community (with a large Jewish population) irrespective of background.[3] The service is staffed entirely by trained volunteer medics and paramedics.
History
Hatzola Northwest began operations in 1979 as a community initiative to provide rapid emergency medical response in North West London.[3] It is part of the broader international Hatzolah network, which originated in the United States and has branches in many Jewish communities worldwide.
The organisation was initially registered as a charity under the name Hatzola Northwest Trust (charity number 1041441). On 2 February 2023 it incorporated as a private company limited by guarantee without share capital under the name Hatzola Northwest Trust Limited (company number 14635020). A related charitable company registration (charity number 1205904) was added on 27 November 2023.[2][4]
The service maintains a fleet of ambulances and fast response units, all equipped with basic life support equipment, oxygen, and defibrillators. Volunteers undergo intensive ongoing training.[3]
Long-term supporters include the Wohl Legacy and the Latchman Family Charitable Trust, which have funded radio systems and multiple ambulances over four decades, including recent replacements for older vehicles.[5]
Operations
Hatzola Northwest operates 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, responding to medical emergencies within its designated area. As of 2026 it had approximately 61 fully qualified volunteer medics and paramedics, supported by a fleet including five active ambulances and three fast response units.[3][6]
The service works alongside local hospitals and the London Ambulance Service, providing free care to all residents in its catchment area.
2026 arson attack
In the early hours of 23 March 2026, four Hatzola Northwest ambulances parked near the Machzike Hadath Synagogue in Golders Green were destroyed in a deliberate arson attack. Oxygen cylinders on the vehicles exploded, causing additional damage including broken windows in nearby buildings.[7][8]
The Metropolitan Police treated the incident as an antisemitic hate crime and are investigating possible links to the militant group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, which reportedly claimed responsibility.[8] Two men were later arrested in connection with the attack.[9]
Replacement ambulances were quickly provided on loan by the London Ambulance Service, and the UK government committed to funding permanent replacements.[7] The attack drew widespread condemnation from UK political and religious leaders, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis.[8]
