Traian Ungureanu
Traian Ungureanu is a Romanian journalist.
Ungureanu holds an MA in Romanian and English Language and Literature from the University of Bucharest.[1]
He fled Romania in 1988, receiving a five year sentence for treason in his absence. He spent a year and a half in Germany as a political refugee in Germany before arriving in Britain in 1989. From 1989 to 2003, he worked as a producer for the BBC World Service Romanian section.[2] Ungureanu was dismissed by the BBC following a restructuring of the department. He was known as a critic of Romanian governments and his departure was criticised by the opposition Liberal party and the Agency for Monitoring Press Freedoms. Two other Romanian BBC journalists resigned in protest at the decision.[3]
Since 2003, he has worked as a freelance journalist.[4]
In 2007, he was proposed by Foreign Minister Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu as ambassador to Great Britain, but the nomination was withdrawn after Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu refused to approve it.[5]
As of June 2008, Ungureanu was a correspondent for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.[6]
