The Friendship Club
The Friendship Club is a social club for older people that meets at Giffnock Newton Mearns Synagogue, 222 Fenwick Road, Giffnock, Glasgow, G46 6UE. According to the synagogue, it was initiated in September 1976 by Rev Ernest Levy and set up by Mrs Ray Gamzu and Mrs Kathy Levy, with the help of Mrs E. Jesner, Mrs E. Stern, Mrs A. Smullen, Mrs E. Clapham and Mrs M. Wolff, "as a cultural and social centre for the over 60 age group". Meetings were at first held fortnightly in the synagogue and later weekly.[1]
The Glasgow Jewish community website says it meets every Tuesday afternoon from 1.45 to 3.45 in the synagogue's reception area, with Myra Livingstone as contact.[2] Its event listings name Giffnock Newton Mearns Hebrew Congregation as organiser.[3]
In April 1997 the Jewish Chronicle reported the 21st birthday of the Giffnock and Newlands Synagogue friendship club, naming Ray Gamzu and Adele Smullen as founders and saying that it met on Tuesdays.[4] An obituary of Adele Smullen in the paper said that she "also ran the shul friendship club".[5] The paper referred to "the Giffnock Friendship Club" in December 2010.[6]
