Teaching About Terrorism is a 2009/10 research project funded by C-SAP, one of the Higher Education Academy's subject networks. The project aims to research the extent and nature of teaching about terrorism in UK Universities, primarily in the disciplines of Sociology, Politics and Criminology.

• Does your institution have any system, policy or procedure in place for dealing with any potential actions taken by the authorities against the institution, its students or staff under Terrorism legislation?

The University does have a good relationship with the police. However it does not have recorded information to supply a response to question 3.

• Does your institution have any system, policy or procedure in place for ‘preventing violent extremism’ as recommended for example in the government guidance document ‘Promoting Good Campus Relations’?

In relation to question 4 The University has a ‘Be Vigilant’ campaign where details are provided in a booklet called ‘The I’ and ‘The I’ organiser where information is supplied all new and returning students. The relevant extract from this booklet is detailed below. Is UCLan involved in tackling terrorism? The threat of terrorist activity is real for all of us, within this country and across the globe. UCLan's Student Support Service is working collaboratively with the Lancashire Constabulary to ensure that the University community remains a safe place to study, to live and to socialise. To raise awareness for all students UCLan is launching the 'Be Vigilant Campaign.' This will involve the sharing of information during student induction and throughout the year. Be vigilant! Possible signs

• Extremist behaviour
• Extreme views
• Isolation
• Circle of friends
• Absence from class
• Unusual or unplanned travel

Be vigilant

• in your house/halls of residence be observant, think about unusual behaviour amongst your flat/house mates.
• in your local café or bar.
• shopping or travelling by public transport (bus, rail, air, sea).
• in your class - be observant; think about unusual behaviour or other students' expression of extreme views.
• socialising - observe unusual or extreme behaviour.

AND REPORT IT: Your personal safety is important and we all have a responsibility to be vigilant. If you see anything unusual share your suspicion . If you believe someone you know or have seen is behaving suspiciously PLEASE take action and REPORT it.
