Sam Alston (full name Samuel Matthew Alston, born July 1993 in Lambeth, London)[1] is a British Green Party of England and Wales activist and project officer based in Milton Keynes / Oxford.[2] He is Secretary of Jewish Greens.[3] He is the older brother of Josh Alston.

Early life

Brought up at Kingston Liberal Synagogue, which is formally Zionist, he says his commitment to Green Party values is rooted in Jewish ethical teachings.[3] He was previously a youth worker for Liberal Judaism (also formally Zionist) and is now a member of the Oxford Jewish Community which is also formally Zionist.[3]

Career

Alston has worked as a Geography teacher in underfunded schools, led volunteer development projects in Zimbabwe after a drought, and now works as an energy advisor helping residents challenge predatory energy firms and reduce bills.[2] He is also treasurer of ACORN Oxford and volunteers with Oxford Mutual Aid.[4]

Green Party of England and Wales roles

Affiliations and views on Zionism

Alston has been an LJY-Netzer Movement worker (circa 2015-6), staff member of Yachad, a representative on the Board of Deputies of British Jews, and co-founder of Na’amod.[3] He has written on the Jewish 'diaspora’s' (a term used by Zionists to imply that 'disapora Jews' belong in occupied Palestine) shifting relationship with Israel.[6][7]

Views on Israel, Palestine, antisemitism and Zionism

Sam Alston regularly posts statements on behalf of Jewish Greens.

Views on the “Zionism is racism” motion

In the February 2026 statement urging rejection of Motion A105 (“Zionism is Racism”), he wrote: “This is not your run-of-the-mill motion opposing Israel’s actions (something that Jewish Greens would have no problem with), but something much more problematic that is likely to make Jews feel unwelcome in the Green Party.”[8]

7th October

On the anniversary of the 7 October 2023 attacks he posted: “Today we remember the atrocities of October 7th, 2023, carried out by Hamas against Israeli citizens and foreign nationals, when more than 1,100 people were brutally killed and another 240 taken hostage. This has escalated into a cycle of violence that continues to destroy lives a year onwards.”[9]

High Holy Day message

In the 2024 High Holy Day message he stated: “Over the last difficult year, as Jewish Greens, we have stood side by side with our communities, pledging to put the evils of the past behind us and work with them to create a more peaceful future.”[10]

Green Party bloc

In March 2026 he called on members to “Join the Green Party bloc on March against the far right.”[11]

Joint statement with Lord Mann

He authored the May 2024 Joint Statement with Lord Mann committing the party to “continued dialogue” on antisemitism.[12]

Joint Muslim and Jewish Greens statement

The same month he published the Joint Statement from Jewish and Muslim Greens: “Together, we oppose any efforts to exploit the ongoing tragedy in Israel-Palestine to foster division, intensify antisemitism, Islamophobia and other forms of racism… It’s crucial to build bridges that encourage unity.”[13] In September 2025, congratulating new leader Zack Polanski, he wrote on behalf of Jewish Greens: “This is an exciting moment for the Green Party, and for the Jewish community as a whole.”[14]
