In March 2016, Chishti became an adviser to the King Faisal Centre for Research and Islamic Studies, a role for which he was paid £2000 a month. Questions were raised by the Liberal Democrats over a potential conflict of interest, given that Chishti had made statements in the Commons they claimed were 'advancing Saudi interests' after he had register the payment.
