Israel / communal fundraising
In October 1953 the Jewish Observer reported that Southport’s Joint Palestine Appeal campaign that month would include Lord Silkin among its guest speakers — the first time, it said, he had travelled outside London to address J.P.A. meetings — and noted that in recent years he had “lent his weight to fostering the cause of Israel” and to “the development of the Haifa Technion”.[1]
On 24 November 1953, at the inaugural dinner of the British Friends of the Haifa Technion in London, I. M. Sieff presided and the Chief Rabbi, Sir Hartley Shawcross, M.P. and Lord Silkin supported the appeal, which raised £50,000.[2]
On 30 November 1960 Lord Silkin was advertised as due to preside at the annual dinner of the British Technion Society at the Savoy Hotel, with guests of honour including Justice Moshe Landau and the Lord Chancellor, Viscount Kilmuir.[3]
On 31 March 1961 Lord and Lady Silkin were guests of honour, with Mr and Mrs Rosser Chinn, at the Finchley J.N.F. Commission’s Barmitzvah (tenth-anniversary) Ball; hosts were Mr and Mrs I. Klug. The evening raised about £6,000.[4]
