Justin Chorn is a chartered accountant and one of the four people who, in August 2014, created the Facebook group from which the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) grew. He now lives in New South Wales, Australia, where he is chief financial officer of the energy infrastructure company TEC-C. He has raised money for the UK branch of the Israeli anti-poverty charity Meir Panim.

Campaign Against Antisemitism

According to the CAA's chairman, Gideon Falter, the campaign began during Israel's 2014 assault on Gaza ("Operation Protective Edge"), when "over in Hendon... Joseph Cohen, Darren Borg, Justin Chorn and Jordan Jay created a Facebook group called Campaign Against Antisemitism". Falter wrote that Rupert Nathan's Facebook campaign against the Tricycle Theatre "soon joined forces with the others", that he himself joined after sending the group "a message filled with my best advice", and that he brought in Jonathan Sacerdoti as "our media man". The group organised the rally outside the Royal Courts of Justice on 31 August 2014.[1] The CAA's Facebook page was set up on 1 August 2014, during the same weeks as the Israeli Forum Task Force's campaigns; see Israeli Forum Task Force: timeline 2014.

The CAA was not incorporated in 2014. It became a legal entity only on 1 October 2015, when it was registered as a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO), charity number 1163790.[2] Companies House holds a record for it only as an externally registered CIO (CE004816), with no officer details,[3] and Chorn has no appointments on the Companies House register. The Charity Commission has granted the CAA a dispensation not to publish its trustees' names, so the register does not show whether Chorn was ever a trustee.[2][4]

Career

Chorn attended Herzlia High in Cape Town from 1988 to 1992. He then studied at the University of Cape Town from 1993 to 1997, gaining a Bachelor of Commerce and a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA). He lists the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants among his certifications.[5] He worked as an auditor at Mazars and in internal audit at Investec.[6] He was chief financial officer of TSC Capital, a London-based private equity business, from April 2008 to December 2014. In Australia he joined Gowing Bros Limited, an ASX-listed investment company, as a finance and investment consultant in February 2015, and was its chief financial officer from August 2015 to April 2017. From May 2017 to January 2020 he was chief financial officer of Capsicum Business Architects, which trades as Capsifi.[6] Since February 2020 he has been chief financial officer of TEC-C Investments, a Sydney-based engineering, procurement and construction company for high-voltage grid connections, hybrid energy systems and battery storage.[6][5][7]

Fundraising

Chorn raised money on JustGiving for the UK Branch of Meir Panim.[8] The charity, registered as Manna – UK Branch of Meir Panim (charity number 1129738), raises money in Britain for Meir Panim, which it describes as "one of Israel's largest relief organisations" and as being "on the front line in the daily battle against poverty and hunger in Israel".[9][10] The money supports the poor in Israel, not immigrants in the UK. In 2011 a Justin Chorn was also one of the team in the Blenheim Triathlon raising money for Kesher, a London Jewish community and outreach centre.[11]
