The Information Operations Task Force inherited some of the role of the Office of Strategic Influence within the US Department of Defense following its abolition, according to James Bamford.
The Los Angeles Times reported in November 2005 that the Task Force was working with the Lincoln Group to produce favourable stories and insert them into the Iraqi media.
