Sir Harold Berners Walker (born October 1932) is a retired British diplomat. He was ambassador successively to Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iraq between 1979 and 1991.[1] Companies House records him as a director of CARE International UK, a CSSF contractor, from 23 September 1992 to 1 November 2001.[2]

Diplomatic career

A biography published by the Cambridge Centre for Palestine Studies, on whose Distinguished Diplomatic Board he sits, says he spent 35 years in the diplomatic service, "during which all but two of his postings overseas were in the Arab world". As a first secretary he worked on trade policy in Washington DC.[1] His 1996 interview for the British Diplomatic Oral History Programme is held at the Churchill Archives Centre, Cambridge.[3]

Later roles

The same biography says that "for the first ten years of his retirement he gave most of his time to the emergency relief and development aid organisation CARE International, eventually becoming President". It says he was later a Commissioner of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and chairman of the Bahrain Society. He chaired the Royal Society for Asian Affairs from 2001 to 2008 and was president of the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies from 2006 to 2010.[1]
