- 1961 - ENVOY AT UNIVERSITY FRIENDS DINNER
- The Israeli Ambassador, Arthur Lourie and Mrs. Lourie and Professor David Daiches were the guests of honour at the annual dinner of the Glasgow Group Friends of the Hebrew University held in the Central Hotel last week. They were welcomed on behalf the community by Mr. Bens Schotz, who presided in the absence owing to illness, of Sir Maurice Bloch, Hon. Vice-President of the group. Mr. Schotz announced that £6,000 had been raised by the diner and stated that the Misses Esterson, of glasgow, had endowed a £3,500 scholarship in the University. The fate of the university lay in the hands of the Jewish people throughout the worls, declared Mr Lourie. Professor Daiches, who recently returned from a lecture tour in Israel, Dr. Samuel Lazarus, and Dr. Sidney S. Naftalin also spoke.'[2]

- 1944 - GLASGOW SOCIETY OF FRIENDS OF THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY OF JERUSALEM A meeting of the committee of Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was held in the Central Hotel, Glasgow, on the 25th May, when Mr, Joseph Sachs, J.P., Chairman presided. The Honorary Secretary and Treasurer, Mr. I. A. Levine, stated that the object of the meeting was to make plans for securing more subscribers and he believed it could be done by appointing conveners in each area who would get a number of people to co-operate with them and make themselves responsible for the area. This proposal was discussed, Mr. S. M. Lipsey, Mr. A. M. Levinson, Mr. Louis Peshkin, Mr. Jack Hamson, J.P., Mrs. B, Shenkin and Mrs. A. Links taking part in the discussion. It was agreed that conveners with appropriate subcommittees should be set up in each district. It was also suggested that a number of house functions should be arranged next winfer £ The folowing agreed to act in the respective areas:—Mr. Louis Peshkin, Queen’s Park area; Mr. I. Collins, Giffnock area; Mr: L. G. Diamond, Muirend area; Mrs. B. Shenkin, Crossmyloof area; Mrs. R. Zederbaum, Merrylee area; Mrs. A. Links, Pollokshields area; Mrs. E. Goldberg, Maxwell Park-—Pollokshields area; Mr. B. Rose, Garnethill area; Mr. A. M. Levinson, B.Sc., and Mr. Berl Wober, Ayr. Mr. I. A. Levine said that the subscriptions were for 1944 and were now due and that at the end of each month a list of subscribers to date would be sent to the conveners, Mr. Sachs, in closing the meeting, said that the University required £25,000 yearly from Great Britain and that it would be very wrong if Glasgow’s contribution was this year less than £l,OOO. He was certain that by general co-operation this could be achieved.[4]
