  • 1976 - Tories walk out Fourteen members of the Conservative group in the Labour-controlled Glasgow District Council walked out of yesterday’s meeting. : They were protesting during a row over the Lord Provost’s absence at a reception at the Soviet Embassy in London. It was said that Lord Provost Peter McCann was attending celebrations of the 59th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. Conservative Councillor Maurice Toshner, chairman of the General Zionist Organisation claimed the Lord Provost’s presence there was against the wishes of the majority of the people of Glasgow. Bailie Dick Dynes, leader of the Labour group, accused Councillor Toshner of misrepresenting the issue. After members of the respective groups had hurled insults at each other the Tories walked out.[1]
