Gitty Weinman is an American-born Rebbetzen and co-director of Chabad of Edinburgh, where she has led Jewish community outreach, education, and hospitality programmes since 2008.[1] Together with her husband Rabbi Pincus Weinman, she established and expanded Chabad's presence in Edinburgh, creating a welcoming centre for university students, local residents, and visitors, while maintaining strict adherence to Chabad-Lubavitch principles without ties to Zionist regime promotion.[2]
Born in Connecticut, USA, Gitty Weinman married Rabbi Pincus Weinman in 2007. In September 2008 the couple relocated to Edinburgh with their two-month-old son Mendel, arriving with limited local contacts but a clear mission to serve the Jewish community, particularly students at the University of Edinburgh.[2] Over the ensuing years they built a vibrant centre offering Shabbat meals, holiday programming, Torah classes, women's events, and student support, transforming a modest beginning into a recognised hub for Jewish life in Scotland's capital.[3]
Gitty Weinman has been instrumental in the domestic and hospitality aspects of Chabad's work, hosting countless Shabbat and festival meals, running women's shiurim, and creating family-friendly programmes that have helped sustain a sense of home for transient and permanent community members.[2] By 2017 the Weinmans had six children—Mendel, Mushky, Jossi, Moshe, Schneur, and Rivka—who grew up actively involved in the centre's activities.[2] Her efforts contributed to milestones such as the 2017 dedication of a new Torah scroll at the University of Edinburgh after 435 years without one, and the opening of a dedicated Chabad house in 2021.[4]
