Gianluigi Aponte (born 27 June 1940) is an Italian-born shipping magnate based in Switzerland. He founded Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in 1970 and is executive chairman of the Geneva-based MSC Group, whose container line Forbes describes as the world's largest.[1][2][3] On 20 October 2026 the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires list ranked Gianluigi Aponte 40th in the world (tied with his wife, Rafaela Aponte-Diamant), with an estimated net worth of US$46.85 billion; Forbes lists the source of wealth as Shipping.[1][4] In the annual World's Billionaires list published in 2026, Forbes had ranked Gianluigi Aponte 44th, at US$44.5 billion.[5]
Early life
Forbes gives his birthplace as Sant'Agnello, on the Sorrento peninsula in Italy, and describes him as a sea captain by training. It reports that he met Rafaela, his future wife, on a trip to Capri in the 1960s, when he was a ship's captain.[1]
Business career
The MSC Group says Aponte founded the business in Brussels in 1970 with one small conventional ship, the MV Patricia.[3] Forbes reports that he and his wife entered shipping together that year, buying a ship with a US$200,000 loan, and named their second vessel after her.[1] The group now covers container shipping, cruises (MSC Cruises), inland logistics (Medlog) and port terminals (Terminal Investment Limited). It says it has more than 200,000 employees and its headquarters in Geneva.[3][1]
In October 2014 MSC announced that Aponte's son, Diego, would become president and chief executive, and that Aponte would become group executive chairman.[6] Forbes reports that in November 2019 MSC appointed Soren Toft, formerly chief operating officer of Maersk, as chief executive, and that in 2019 it took delivery of the MSC Gulsun, then the world's largest container ship.[1]
Corriere della Sera described 2022 as a year of rapid expansion. It reported that MSC overtook Maersk in container capacity and took control of the tug operator Rimorchiatori Mediterranei. It said MSC paid €150 million for a stake in the ferry company Moby, eventually 49%, which helped Moby's owner, Vincenzo Onorato, secure the guarantee needed to avoid bankruptcy, and that it bought Bolloré Africa Logistics.[7] Forbes puts the Bolloré deal, completed in December 2022, at US$6 billion.[1]
2025 ownership transfer
On 13 April 2026 MSC announced that ownership had passed during the last quarter of 2025 from Aponte to his son and daughter, Diego Aponte (group president) and Alexa Aponte (group chief financial officer), and that Aponte would remain executive chairman.[2] Forbes's 2026 profile, by contrast, still describes Aponte and his wife as each owning 50% of MSC.[1] This profile has not resolved the discrepancy.
Wealth
Forbes gives the source of the couple's wealth as shipping and assigns each of them the same estimate, on the basis of 50% ownership of MSC each.[1] See the 2025 ownership transfer above.[2]

Controversies and legal issues
In July 2019 US Customs and Border Protection seized the MSC-operated container ship MSC Gayane in Philadelphia, after almost 20 tons (39,525 lb) of cocaine were found in seven containers aboard. CBP called it the largest vessel it had ever seized and spoke of "an alleged conspiracy by crewmembers and others".[8] No proceedings against Aponte personally were found.

Israel (investments, operations, donations, contracts, statements)
In February 2026 a joint investigation by Al Jazeera and the Palestinian Youth Movement, based on US import records, reported that between 1 January and 22 November 2025 MSC carried at least 957 shipments of goods from companies in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank to the United States. It also reported that MSC has cooperation and vessel-sharing agreements with the Israeli shipping company ZIM.
