The Fleet Intelligence Centre (FIC) was a Royal Navy intelligence unit based at HMS Collingwood that provided maritime intelligence support to fleet operations.[1]
It was part of Navy Command and sat outside the central Defence Intelligence structure, focusing on operational maritime intelligence for the Fleet Commander rather than national-level fusion.[1]
The Fleet Intelligence Centre was restructured and replaced by the Maritime Intelligence Exploitation Group (MIXG) in October 2016 as part of the Royal Navy’s Information Warfare Programme.[2]
History
The Fleet Intelligence Centre operated from HMS Collingwood and supported signals intelligence (SIGINT) and related training. On 21 July 2016 the First Sea Lord visited the unit to open new SHAMAN operator training facilities.[3]
At that time the unit still existed under its original name; Commander Roger Noyce, Commanding Officer of the Maritime Intelligence Support Group (MISG), stated: “We are honoured to welcome the First Sea Lord to the Fleet Intelligence Centre today to open the SHAMAN training facility.”[3]
The Fleet Intelligence Centre was disbanded in October 2016 when it “has grown and been renamed” into the Maritime Intelligence Exploitation Group (MIXG), which incorporated all elements of the former Maritime Intelligence Support Group.[2]
Role and structure
The Fleet Intelligence Centre delivered intelligence support to the Fleet within Navy Command. It was distinct from the tri-service Joint Forces Intelligence Group and central Defence Intelligence organisations.[1]
The Maritime Intelligence Support Group (MISG) was a related unit whose elements were absorbed into the restructured Fleet Intelligence Centre during its transition to MIXG.[3][2]
Successor
The Fleet Intelligence Centre was succeeded by the Maritime Intelligence Exploitation Group (MIXG) in October 2016.[2]
