Research Grants Board

Our Role

Our key role is to fund the highest quality research. We are responsible for managing the Research Standard Grants, Small Grants and Fellowship Schemes, awarding about 250 grants annually, as well as annual competitions such as Professional Fellowships, First Grants and Large Grants. Our annual budget exceeds £45 million.

How We Work

We meet four times a year (October, January, April and July). The 22-26 members (including chair and vice chair) are drawn from academics and users. Members are normally initially appointed for two years, and may be re-appointed for up to a further two years. New members are appointed every year to replace those at the end of their term of office. Details of vacancies are published in late autumn on the ESRC website, and in selected newspapers.
