The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS; French: Communauté Économique des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest) is a regional political and economic union of 15 West African countries established on 28 May 1975.

Role of Israel

Israel is not a member of ECOWAS, but maintains significant bilateral security, counter-terrorism, agricultural and technological cooperation with several member states. Key aspects of Israeli involvement include:

• Counter-terrorism and security cooperation: Israeli companies such as Mer Group and experts have provided training, tactical equipment, intelligence support and surveillance systems to ECOWAS countries facing threats from groups such as Boko Haram and other jihadist insurgencies in the Sahel region.
• Agricultural and water technology: Israel has shared expertise in desalination, drip-irrigation and dry-land farming to help combat climate-induced droughts and food insecurity across the Sahel.
• Intelligence and surveillance: Some ECOWAS members use Israeli satellite imagery and border-security systems to monitor insurgencies, piracy in the Gulf of Guinea and illegal mining operations.

These ties are managed on a bilateral basis rather than through formal ECOWAS-wide agreements.
