Blogs have become a new phenomenon on the internet enabling anyone to cheaply publish materials. There are thousands of blogs with a huge range of quality and purpose. It is also clear that blogs have emerged as a propaganda tool. Blogs have been used for:

1. smearing and attacking political opponents;
2. coordinating actions of many agents for political purposes;
3. launching rumor campaigns or means to undermine the credibility of mainstream media stories
4. forming part of a smear ratcheting campaign (one blogger providing smear material that is then built upon by another propagandist; tactic to avoid lawsuits)

On 16 Feb. 2007, it emerged that the White House press office has alloted a growing number of seats at press conferences to bloggers. With few exceptions the bloggers weren't identified, but it indicates that the relationship between official propaganda and blogs deserves more attention. (Source: BBC News)
