  • 1944 - GLASGOW SOCIETY OF FRIENDS OF THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY OF JERUSALEM A meeting of the committee of Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was held in the Central Hotel, Glasgow, on the 25th May, when Mr, Joseph Sachs, J.P., Chairman presided. The Honorary Secretary and Treasurer, Mr. I. A. Levine, stated that the object of the meeting was to make plans for securing more subscribers and he believed it could be done by appointing conveners in each area who would get a number of people to co-operate with them and make themselves responsible for the area. This proposal was discussed, Mr. S. M. Lipsey, Mr. A. M. Levinson, Mr. Louis Peshkin, Mr. Jack Hamson, J.P., Mrs. B, Shenkin and Mrs. A. Links taking part in the discussion. It was agreed that conveners with appropriate subcommittees should be set up in each district. It was also suggested that a number of house functions should be arranged next winfer £ The folowing agreed to act in the respective areas:—Mr. Louis Peshkin, Queen’s Park area; Mr. I. Collins, Giffnock area; Mr: L. G. Diamond, Muirend area; Mrs. B. Shenkin, Crossmyloof area; Mrs. R. Zederbaum, Merrylee area; Mrs. A. Links, Pollokshields area; Mrs. E. Goldberg, Maxwell Park-—Pollokshields area; Mr. B. Rose, Garnethill area; Mr. A. M. Levinson, B.Sc., and Mr. Berl Wober, Ayr. Mr. I. A. Levine said that the subscriptions were for 1944 and were now due and that at the end of each month a list of subscribers to date would be sent to the conveners, Mr. Sachs, in closing the meeting, said that the University required £25,000 yearly from Great Britain and that it would be very wrong if Glasgow’s contribution was this year less than £l,OOO. He was certain that by general co-operation this could be achieved.[2]

The Purim - Function (Supper and Dance) will be held in the large hall of the [[Talmud Torah], with Rev. Perlzweig as principal guest. It is hoped that the full co-operation of the Ladies Zionist Organisation, the Maccabeans, and the Junior Organisation, will be forthcoming for this great Zionist gathering. The report on the work of the J.N.F. was submitted by Mr. A. M. Levinson. The Committee is fully prepared and anxious to assist in the J.N.F. work, and hopes that it will be possible to make working arrangements which will assist the co-operation between the two Societies. The Organisation considers that it would be for the smoother working of the Society’s plans if the official working year were to correspond with the Jewish year, and the first Annual Meeting should take place as soon as possible after Rosh Hashanah.
