In general an activity of the Commission's Pharmaceutical Unit is to "ensure the protection of consumers against possible harmful effects resulting from the exposure to residues of veterinary medicinal products present in foodstuffs". <ref> MRL http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/pharmaceuticals/mrl/index.htm Accessed 1/03/08 </ref>  By continually reviewing and ammending such regulations, it is the aim of the unit to guarantee a high level of public health protection by ensuring that MRLs meet international standards in trading. In simple terms, the trade of reared animals in the EU are set within MRLS which regulate the exposure they have to veterinary pharmaceuticals.
