John McNamara is head of corporate communications at NuGen. [1] He was previously head of media and public relations at the Nuclear Industry Association [2](January 2007 – October 2011) and also held the same position at British Energy. (May 2003 – December 2006)
Background

- John spent more than a decade working in regional journalism in East Anglia becoming editor of five weekly titles with a distribution of more than 250,000.
- He specialised in business reporting and first came into contact with the nuclear industry by covering the construction of Sizewell B power station in Suffolk between 1988 - 1994. He contributed regularly to BBC Radio and national newspapers before joining the nuclear industry to work for British Energy.
- After becoming chief press officer he eventually became Head of Media and Public Relations for the FTSE100-listed company. He joined the UK Nuclear Industry Association in 2006. The NIA, which is funded solely by its member companies, campaigns on behalf of the UK nuclear industry and some 53,000 British nuclear workers. It has full trade union support and played a major part in getting new nuclear build back on the agenda, and more recently in thought-leadership and nuclear communications, post-Fukushima. John led the NIA on external and membership communications through this period, leaving in October 2011 to join NIA-member company NuGen.
- John is head of Corporate Communications at NuGen, which is a UK nuclear company , owned by energy giants Iberdrola and Gdf Suez. NuGen aims to develop some 3.6GW of new nuclear capacity at its Moorside site in West Cumbria. John is an Energy Professional who has particularly strong experience in crisis management, media relations, public opinion, emergency preparedness, speech writing, public affairs and internal communications. John is working hard towards realising a goal of seeing new nuclear power stations built in the UK, and of being part of facillitating a much wider understanding of nuclear power and energy in general. He would also like to see a much greater appreciation and respect for science and engineering in the UK - not just from government - but from the general public too.
