Joel Joffe, former Deputy Chairman (and one of the founders) of Allied Dunbar Assurance, gave more than £5,000 to the Labour Party in 1997 and £10,000 in march 2001. He served on the Royal Commission on Long-Term Care and along with David (now also Lord) Lipsey, produced a minority report which enabled the Government to ignore the expensive provision of care recommended by the majority of Commission members. He was given his peerage in the 1999 New Years Honours list. He is the Chairman of Oxfam.
