Note: The Food Safety Quality Assurance MSc program in Food Science is a course-based degree, that requires a major research project the equivalent of a two-semester course. The research project requires a supervisor, must produce a paper suitable for publication in the ournal of Food Protection or Dariy, Food and Environmental Sanitation, and must be presented orally and examined by a committee of three reserachers.
Briefly describe research in progress and major research accomplishments during the past four years, with the most recent first.
The Food Safety Network, the name for Dr. Powell's lab includes:
§ the identification, development, implementation and assessment of appropriate food safety interventions from farm-to-fork, including on-farm food safety programs for Ontario processing vegetables, greenhouse vegetables and most recently field fruit and vegetables in Ontario;
§ the incorporation of public perceptions and cost-benefit analyses into policy development through survey work and media analysis, without abdicating the leadership role of science;
§ an evaluation of policy alternatives such as voluntary, regulatory, and market interventions to achieve optimal levels of food safety;
§ a web site and database providing extensive references and summary documents, complete searchable archives for the four listserves, as well as extensive use of on-farm, in-plant and in the home video to illustrate food production, and a consumer-oriented section "Eat Well, Eat Safe;"
§ a comprehensive Information Centre featuring a national toll-free food safety telephone line staffed by food and health professionals
§ an expansion of educational and consumer outreach at the Food Safety Network Model Farm, a 250-acre fruit and vegetable operation owned and operated by Jeff and Sharon Wilson of Hillsburgh, Ontario, including continuing comparative research on genetically engineered and conventional sweet corn and potatoes, the certification of a parcel of land as organic (a three-year process) and extensive microbial sampling of fresh produce to determine appropriate interventions to reduce microbial contamination from planting through to retail;
§ the establishment of an institutional vehicle for policy forums, to serve as a neutral academic platform for multi-sectoral debate of key policy issues affecting food safety;
§ the development of a new graduate course in food safety risk analysis, initially offered in the summer 2002 and ultimately a distance education MSc, to help produce a new generation of science-based public policy and public education leaders in diverse fields as well as training for government, industry and academia in food safety risk assessment, management, policy and communications;
§ the development and evaluation of food safety curricular materials for elementary and secondary school education;
§ on-going research on international aspects of food-safety trade disputes;
§ a refocused commitment to actively engage the Canadian and international publics in discussions and debate about food safety options, alternatives and efficiencies through on-going media outreach, letters-to-the-editor, research-based press releases and weekly opinion articles distributed nationally and internationally.
