About CIPE

The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) is an independent, non-profit affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. As one of the four core institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy, CIPE promotes democratic and market-oriented economic reform by working directly with the private sector in developing countries.

Since 1983, CIPE has supported more than 700 local initiatives in over 80 developing countries to organize business associations and involve businessmen and women in policy advocacy, institutional reform, and responsible governance. By supporting entrepreneurship and business development, CIPE helps build the foundation for accountable, democratic institutions and economic growth.

CIPE administers a worldwide grants program, provides specialized training for entrepreneurs, conducts an award-winning communications strategy, and furnishes technical assistance through field offices overseas. CIPE’s strategy focuses on the following key program areas:

• Mobilizing the business sector for public policy advocacy
• Building knowledge of how markets function in a democracy
• Advancing privatization as a key step to improved competitiveness
• Promoting the freedom of economic information
• Establishing property rights and the rule of law
• Involving the private sector in rebuilding post-conflict environments
• Combating corruption
• Promoting sound corporate governance measures
• Strengthening the role of women-owned businesses and women’s business associations
• Bringing the informal sector into the formal economy

"Nearly all projects funded through CIPE require the grantee to provide matching funds to facilitate the program’s implementation. Utilizing grant funds from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), CIPE leverages additional funds from the private sector and other organizations to maximize efforts to strengthen democracy and market-oriented reform."
