Chairman of Eastwood Jewish Community Centres and trustee of Giffnock Newton Mearns Synagogue
Michael Goodman is a Glasgow Jewish communal official. He is chairman of Eastwood Jewish Community Centres (EJCC), the charity that owns the synagogue buildings of the merged Giffnock and Newton Mearns congregations, and was chairman of its sister charity Giffnock Newton Mearns Synagogue (GNMS).[1][2] He was one of the trustees of Giffnock and Newlands Hebrew Congregation who transferred 222 Fenwick Road to EJCC in 2022.[3]
Synagogue and property roles
- Giffnock and Newlands Hebrew Congregation: Goodman, Evelyn (Evy) Yedd, Ephraim Joseph Borowski and Bernard Louis Cohen, "all as Trustees of Giffnock and Newlands Hebrew Congregation", disponed the synagogue site at 222 Fenwick Road to Eastwood Jewish Community Centres for a price of "ZERO POUNDS (£0)", with a date of entry of 20 October 2022. The deed, prepared by Mitchells Roberton, gives Goodman's address as 66 Broomfield Avenue, Newton Mearns, Glasgow, G77 5JP. He signed it in Glasgow on 25 October 2022, and his signature was witnessed by Kenneth Steven Gerber of Mitchells Roberton.[3]
- Giffnock synagogue officers, 2022: Goodman was elected parnass (senior warden) in June 2022, when Jeffrey Jesner was elected chairman.[4]
- Giffnock Newton Mearns Synagogue: in August 2023 the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council described him as the synagogue's chairman.[5] In July 2024 the Jewish Link quoted him, as "the president and building manager of the Giffnock Newton Mearns Synagogue", saying "We work very closely with the police here".[6] The synagogue's accounts for the year to 31 August 2025 list him as chairman, and he is a trustee on the OSCR register.[2][7] The synagogue's website listed Ken Gerber as chair in October 2026.[8]
- Eastwood Jewish Community Centres: EJCC's 2025 accounts list Goodman as vice-chairman until 25 May 2025 and as chairman from that date, succeeding W Karpf.[1][9]
- Larchfield Court: in May 2025 the Jewish Telegraph reported "the completion of the agreement for the lease/purchase of the former Newton Mearns Synagogue site" by Mother Earth Hindu Temple, Glasgow, and quoted Goodman, as synagogue chairman, on the use of the "initial £60,000 payment" made since "the contract with Mother Earth was signed in January".[10]
Other communal roles
- Scottish Council of Synagogues: the Glasgow Jewish community website lists Michael Goodman as chair of the Scottish Council of Synagogues, the meeting of the chairmen of the Orthodox synagogues.[11]
- Jewish Care Scotland: in August 2023 he sat on a discussion panel at a Jewish Care Scotland "Welcome Wednesday" session with Timothy Lovat, president of the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council.[5]
