Al-Akhbar (The News) is an Arabic daily newspaper published in Beirut by Akhbar Beirut. Its first issue appeared on 14 August 2006, at the end of the 2006 Israeli war on Lebanon. It uses the licence of an earlier paper of the same name founded in 1953.[1][2]

Editors and politics

The paper was founded by the journalist Joseph Samaha (1949–2007). Ibrahim al-Amine is its editor-in-chief and chairman.[1] The Media Ownership Monitor describes it as "a pro-Hezbollah and pro-Syrian regime daily".[2] The New York Times wrote in 2010 that it "wholeheartedly supports Hezbollah" while backing feminist and gay-rights causes, and quoted al-Amine: "We wanted the U.S. ambassador to wake up in the morning, read it and get upset."[3] In 2006 Le Commerce du Levant reported that the paper's director denied rumours of Iranian capital, saying that shareholders were Lebanese businessmen, none holding more than 18%.[4]

Reporting on southern land

On 3 October 2026 the paper reported that owners of land in occupied southern villages had received offers from lawyers in the United States. It also reported claims about the banker Antoun Sehnaoui and Solidere shares.[5] See Lebanese draft law banning property sales in occupied areas (2026).
