Sir Alex Younger was appointed as the next Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) in October 2014.[1]

Younger joined MI6 in 1991. He has had overseas postings in Europe and the Middle East and has filled a variety of operational roles.[1]

Afghanistan Station Chief

He was at one time the senior MI6 officer in Afghanistan.[1]

Head of counter-terrorism

He led MI6 work on counter terrorism in the three years running up to the 2012 Olympic Games.[1]

Head of operations

For the two years prior to his appointment as Chief of MI6 he oversaw the Service’s intelligence operations worldwide.[1]

'Fourth generation espionage' speech

In December 2018, in a public speech at the University of St Andrews, Younger described what he called 'fourth generation espionage'. He warned about Russian state activity and set out MI6's approach to the digital age.[2]

Succession

In July 2020 the government announced that Richard Moore would succeed Younger, who left the service that autumn.[3]
