Defence and Intelligence Directorate General is one of ten Directorates General in the FCDO.
The current (late 2025) Director General for Defence and Security at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) is Jonathan Allen CMG. The specific title of the role has recently shifted from "Director General, Defence and Intelligence" to "Director General, Defence and Security".
Role and Responsibilities
As Director General for Defence and Security, Jonathan Allen's role includes:
- Leading the FCDO's work in areas such as NATO, European defence and security, global security partnerships, counter-proliferation, arms control, and arms exports.
- Ensuring FCDO policy and plans are integrated across the UK government's national security community.
- Providing senior policy advice at Board level.
People
- Jonathan Allen was appointed to the role in February 2024, and the title was updated to "Director General Defence and Security" in September 2025.
- His predecessor, Sir Thomas Drew KCMG, served as Director General, Defence and Intelligence from February 2020 to December 2023, and took up the post of British Ambassador to France in August 2025.
- Chris Rampling CMG MBE served as the interim Director General for Defence and Intelligence from December 2023 to February 2024.
