'Rabbi Hillel Zaltzman (born 1939) is a rabbi, author, and chairman (president) of Chamah (also referred to as Hama), an organisation dedicated to spreading and preserving Judaism among Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union (FSU).[1][2]

Biography

Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in 1939, Zaltzman grew up under Soviet rule. As a teenager, he joined the underground Jewish organisation Chamah in Samarkand to preserve Jewish life and provide assistance amid persecution.[1][3]

He later immigrated to Israel and continued his work, eventually leading Chamah internationally.[1]

Chamah Organisation

Chamah, founded as an underground network in the Soviet Union, transitioned to formal activities supporting Jewish education, humanitarian aid, and religious revival among FSU immigrants in Israel, the US, and elsewhere.[2][4]

Under Rabbi Zaltzman's leadership as president, it has expanded to include social services, medical aid, Jewish outreach, and community programmes.[2]

Works

Zaltzman authored Samarkand: The Underground with a Far-Reaching Impact, detailing the Jewish resistance in the Soviet Union.[3]
