The Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre (DIFC) was a British Ministry of Defence (MoD) specialist unit responsible for the fusion, analysis and dissemination of multi-source geospatial, imagery and related intelligence to support UK Armed Forces operations and national security decision-making.[1]
It evolved from the Joint Air Reconnaissance Intelligence Centre (JARIC) and operated as part of the Joint Forces Intelligence Group.[1]
The Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre was renamed from the Defence Geospatial Intelligence Fusion Centre (DGIFC) on 17 September 2014 following relocation to RAF Wyton.[1] It was restructured and replaced in 2016 by the National Centre for Geospatial Intelligence (NCGI), which assumed its core functions as the UK's national lead for geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) and defence lead for open-source intelligence (OSINT).[2][3]
History
The Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre traces its lineage to JARIC, formally established in 1953. On 13 July 2012 the JARIC title was retired and the unit was redesignated the Defence Geospatial Intelligence Fusion Centre (DGIFC) to reflect its expanded multi-intelligence fusion role.[1]
In 2013 the unit relocated from RAF Brampton to the Pathfinder Building at RAF Wyton under the PRIDE (Wyton) Programme, creating a multi-intelligence open-plan environment.[4]
On 17 September 2014 it was renamed the Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre (DIFC).[1]
The Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre was restructured in 2016 with its capabilities integrated into the newly established National Centre for Geospatial Intelligence (NCGI).[2][3]
Functions
The Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre provided fused geospatial intelligence (GEOINT), imagery exploitation and multi-source analysis to defence and cross-government customers.[1]
It supported strategic to tactical decision-making through advanced imagery analysis, satellite reconnaissance and open-source integration.[1]
Subunits and components
As part of the Joint Forces Intelligence Group, the Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre incorporated elements of:
- JARIC / National Imagery Exploitation Centre – imagery analysis
- Elements of the Defence Geographic Centre (DGC) – geospatial foundation data
Relation to the National Centre for Geospatial Intelligence
The Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre was the direct predecessor of the National Centre for Geospatial Intelligence (NCGI). In 2016 the Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre was restructured and its functions, staff and facilities at RAF Wyton were absorbed into the National Centre for Geospatial Intelligence, which expanded the mandate to serve as the national lead for GEOINT and the defence lead for OSINT while retaining the Pathfinder Building as its headquarters.[2][3]
The National Centre for Geospatial Intelligence continues the Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre's core mission under Strategic Command within Defence Intelligence.[2]
Commanders
Limited public information is available on commanders of the Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre. The unit was typically led by a one-star officer.
