Daniel Isiah Sternberg (born September 1982) is a British district judge (Magistrates' Courts) and former barrister specialising in extradition and public law. He served as Honorary Lawyer of The Liberal Jewish Synagogue until January 2022.[1]

Early life and family

Daniel Sternberg is the son of Michael Vivian Sternberg KC (born 1948), a prominent family law barrister and President of the Faith & Belief Forum. He is the grandson of the late philanthropist and interfaith campaigner Sir Sigmund Sternberg (1921–2016), who was a major figure in British-Jewish communal life and interfaith relations.

The Sternberg family has been deeply involved in legal, philanthropic and interfaith work for three generations.

Legal career

Sternberg was called to the Bar and practised as a barrister at Foundry Chambers, specialising in extradition, public law and international criminal matters. He successfully resisted High Court challenges in notable extradition cases, including one involving a man accused of double murder in Brazil.[2]

In December 2021 he was appointed a District Judge (Magistrates' Courts).[3]

Role in the Ben Jamal and Chris Nineham case

In 2025 Daniel Sternberg presided as the District Judge (Magistrates' Courts) in the high-profile trial of Ben Jamal and Chris Nineham, senior figures in the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. The case concerned protest-related charges and attracted significant public and media attention. Sternberg delivered the verdict in the proceedings.[4]

Role at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue

From at least 2016 until his resignation on 10 January 2022, Sternberg served as Honorary Lawyer of The Liberal Jewish Synagogue (charity 1159292). He was succeeded by Jacob Gifford Head.[1][5]
