James Lanius Stewart (d. 2006) was a famous American "Asia hand" who, according to San Francisco Chronicle, went from being a 'newsman in China to anti-communist propagandist, to U.S. diplomat and to seminal figure in the founding of the San Francisco-based Asia Foundation. In his later years, he was a respected cultural emissary as the foundation's Japan representative.' He established 12 of the CIA linked foundation's 18 offices in Asia.
