Charles E. Grassley

Charles E. Grassley is the Republican US Senator from Iowa. In January 2009, he re-introduced the Physician Payments Sunshine Act in the US, calling for national public reporting of payments made to doctors by drug, device and biologic manufacturers. The legislation was included in the health care reform bill passed in October 2009.[1] Grassley has written to leading medical schools and journals asking them to 'describe their policies on ghostwriting'. He has also led a Congressional inquiry asking America's leading researchers to provide their conflict-of-interest disclosures and compared those with records of actual payments from drug companies.[2] According to the Senator:
- 'I’m interested in transparency, and academic institutions play an important role in establishing adequate and meaningful disclosure. Letting the sun shine in and making information public is basic to building people’s confidence in medical research and the practice of medicine.'[3]
