The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee exists "to ensure that Government policy and decision-making are based on good scientific and engineering advice and evidence".

Activities

The Committee has a broad remit and can examine the activities of departments where they have implications for, or made use of, science, engineering, technology and research.

It is unusual amongst departmental select committees in that it scrutinises the Government Office for Science (GO-Science), which is a "semi-autonomous organisation" based within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). GO-Science "supports the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and works to ensure that Government policy and decision-making is underpinned by robust scientific evidence". The committee therefore has a similarly broad remit and can examine the activities of departments where they have implications for, or made use of, science, engineering, technology and research.

People

The members of the Committee were appointed on 12 July 2010. Stephen McPartland MP was appointed on 14 February 2011, replacing Alok Sharma MP. Four changes to the Committee membership were made on 27 February 2012 and one further change on 11 June 2012. Andrew Miller MP was elected by the House to be the Chair of the Committee on 9 June 2010.
