War Crimes Allegations
In a January 2010 diplomatic cable obtained by Channel 4 News from Wikileaks, US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Patricia Butenis said it was 'unsurprising' that the Sri Lankan government had not investigated war crimes in the final months of the civil war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam:
- "In Sri Lanka, this is further complicated by the fact that responsibility for many of the alleged crimes rests with the country's senior civilian and military leadership, including President Rajapakse and his brothers and opposition candidate General Fonseka".[2]
