Teaching About Terrorism is a 2009/10 research project funded by C-SAP, one of the Higher Education Academy's subject networks. The project aims to research the extent and nature of teaching about terrorism in UK Universities, primarily in the disciplines of Sociology, Politics and Criminology[1].

Further to your freedom of information request please be advised that the University of Ulster's Policy on Acceptable Use which applies to everyone who uses University of Ulster owned or leased information and communications equipments or networks states that unacceptable use includes images or text depicting violence or personal violent crime and images or text concerning the commissioning of acts of terrorism and the dissemination of the same. The Policy also states that viewing, downloading or distributions of materials which depict any of the above, are criminal offences. The policy which is circulated to all staff and students sets out the consequences of any breaches of the policy. A revised policy was implemented in January 2010 and is available online at Guidance on the procedures for disclosing information to relevant authorities in order to prevent or detect crime was issued to all staff in 2009 and is available online at. The University has adopted a policy of creating a politically neutral environment throughout all parts of the institution. The University's Equality Scheme, approved by the Equality Commission in July 2002, sets out the University's commitment to its statutory obligations under the Northern Ireland Act 1998 to carry out all its functions to have regard to the desirability of promoting good relations between persons of different religious belief, political opinion or racial group. A copy of the Scheme is available online at. The University's Equal Opportunities Policy, (updated in October 2008) and Bullying and Harassment Policy (implemented in March 2004) set out the University's responsibilities to promote a good and harmonious working environment in which no member of staff or student feels under threat or intimidated on grounds of religious beliefs, political opinion. All staff receive training on the University's Equality Scheme which provides guidance on the University's complaints procedures. The documents are available online at. The Students' Union commitment to the policy of creating a politically neutral environment is outlined in its Protocol Governing All On-Campus Political Activities, available online at. The Policy was implemented in 2007. Emergency telephone numbers and first aid contacts are widely publicised throughout the University. Each campus at the University has chaplaincy services and their location is clearly signposted.[2]
