Simon Brook was chief broadcasting officer at the Conservative Party Central Office from 1989 to 1995. [1] In 1999 he wrote an article for the Independent in which he recalled an encounter with the BBC Director-General John Birt:

Back in 1993, at the Tory conference, I bumped into him. "Do you think your party regards us as biased?" he asked. It seemed a naive question.

"I'm afraid so," I said.

"What can we do to persuade them?"

"Nothing," I replied. [2]
