David Abraham Schreiber (GRO David A Schreiber, 1947 Q3, Staines, mother’s maiden name Weinstock; Companies House date of birth July 1947; officer ID Sz2LMUYCH3MTns4TTsk-UT0Q9vc) is a British director and trustee, resident in Israel on his remaining active appointment.[1][2]

He married Ruth M Merel (GRO 1947 Q3, Staines, maiden Diller) in Hendon, 1967 Q3.[3][4] She is the artist Ruth Schreiber (Enter the Eruv; Letters from My Grandparents).

He is not David Schreiber (August 1952, Midos Group) or David Schreiber (born 1976).

Family

Chaim Samuel Schreiber (1918–1984) married Sara Weinstock in London in 1942. Three children. David compiled The Weinstock Letters: 1939–1948 on his mother’s Kindertransport generation.[5]

After Chaim died in May 1984, press histories say “his son David” took Schreiber Furniture, closed Hoddesdon, concentrated Runcorn, and sold in August 1987 (management buy-in, Bob Thornton and Stanley Cohen, about £16 million). MFI bought the brand in 1988.[6]

Address match. Dissolved Schreiber Holdings Limited (00415439) uses 9 West Heath Road, NW3 7UX — Schreiber House, listed Grade II for C.S. Schreiber.[7]

Marriage and children

Hendon 1967 Q3 marriage to Ruth Merel.[3] Community Chronicle, 17 December 1993, names Benji Schreiber, son of eruv committee member David Schreiber, as the person who recorded a tape used at the North-West London eruv inquiry.

Residence: Israel, Ruth’s 1980 date, and return to Britain

Press, Companies House and family statements do not support a single emigration year.

Ruth. Family accounts attribute to his wife Ruth Schreiber the claim that she moved in 1980. That is her date. It does not by itself fix his continuous residence abroad from 1980, and it is compatible with him keeping an Israel company while the UK furniture group still existed.

His own mid-1980s return. By autumn 1985 he was in Britain as managing director of the family furniture group, touring openings with his mother Sara Schreiber, widow of Chaim Schreiber. The Leicester Mercury recorded that a “special family bond” had “bought Mr Schreiber back to Britain from Israel where he had launched his own successful high-technology company” after his father, who had started the furniture business in 1952, “died last year.” He was quoted: “My company in Israel is still flourishing, but I had no hesitation in returning to run the family business.” Married with four children; about 400 staff and turnover of about £50 million. The Leicester visit was the opening of a Schreiber centre at the Briggs Group, St Margaret’s Way.[8]

He was still the public UK chairman in June 1987, photographed at the new Schreiber Centre, 16 Church Street, Portadown, with Dermot Graham.[9] Family control of the brand ended that August in the management buy-in.

Later Companies House filings for this officer (July 1947) give country of residence as Israel (for example on S.W.I. Trustees Limited). That is a later residence after the 1984–87 furniture interlude, not proof he never left Israel in the mid-1980s.

1981 Jerusalem indictment (identity not proved)

The Jewish Chronicle of 13 February 1981, dateline Jerusalem, reported:

Mr David Schreiber, 34, a British national living in Jerusalem, has been indicted in Tel Aviv district court on a charge of taking his sister’s three small children out of Israel in contravention of a court order. The accused, a member of one of the Chasidic sects, is said to have taken Mrs Yehudit Roth’s three children: Ayala, aged 11, Gershon, nine, and Dan seven, to England, despite a ruling by the local Beth Din that the children were to remain in the custody of their father, Mr Itzhak Roth, while divorce proceedings were under way. Mr Schreiber is reported to have slipped through border control at Ben-Gurion airport and to have flown the children to London by registering them as his own on his British passport. Mrs Roth left the country at the same time. No date has yet been set for the trial.[10]

On 14 August 1981 the same paper wrote that, because a judge feared he might not return, “Mr David Schreiber, a Jerusalem member of a Chasidic sect, has been ordered to deposit a surety amounting to some £78,000 with Tel Aviv district court, before being allowed to travel to the United States on business.” Itzhak Roth, “who is married to Mr Schreiber’s sister, Yehudit, is suing him for £109,000 damages” and “has accused Mr Schreiber of helping Mrs Roth to smuggle the couple’s three children out of Israel to England.”[11]

What matches this furniture-line David: age 34 in February 1981 ≈ July 1947; British national; already tied to Israel before the 1985 “return to run the family business” quote; later CH residence Israel.

What does not match on the face of the cuttings: the 1981 man is called a Jerusalem Chasid; the 1985–87 man is photographed clean-shaven as Schreiber Furniture chairman with Sara Schreiber in Leicester and Portadown.[8][9]

Sister Yehudit / Judith Roth

GRO births, mother’s maiden name Weinstock, Staines: Ruth Schreiber 1943; Judith Schreiber 1946; David A Schreiber 1947.[12]

Itzhak Roth married Judith Schreiber (index “Juoith Schreiber”), St Marylebone, 1968 Q3.[13]

That is the same sister named in the Jewish Chronicle in 1981 as Yehudit Roth, wife of Itzhak Roth, mother of Ayala (11), Gershon (9) and Dan (7). The accused uncle was “Mr David Schreiber, 34, a British national living in Jerusalem.” Age 34 in February 1981 is the 1947 birth.[10][11]

The 1981 “Chasid / Jerusalem” label and the 1985–87 Schreiber Furniture chairman are therefore the same civil person — David Abraham Schreiber — not a second David. The cuttings differ in dress and communal description, not in sister, age or nationality.

North-West London eruv

United Synagogue eruv committee spokesman, then chairman. Hendon, 1987, after Rabbi Alan Kimche asked for a committee. Inauguration 2003 after a 15-year planning fight (Barnet; inspector David Bushby; John Gummer).[14]

Date Paper Copy
18 September 1992 Community Chronicle Spokesman; Kellerman objections “preposterous”
25 September 1992 Community Chronicle Spokesman; Suburb Trust letter
22 January 1993 Community Chronicle Chairman; Ham and High “a provocation”
17 December 1993 Jewish Chronicle Member; son Benji’s tape
(Bushby / Gummer item) Community Chronicle Chairman; nylon-line cost

JMR: moved to Jerusalem in 1995, stayed on the committee, travelled back. Ruth’s Enter the Eruv (2011) is dedicated to that campaign.[15]

In June 1994 the Birmingham Daily Post, in a feature on road rage, named a David Schreiber, “an elder of the United Synagogue”, who “jumped out of his Mercedes and punched a Buddhist monk who was driving a Nissan Micra” in a London traffic jam.[16] That description matches this United Synagogue / furniture-line David, not David Schreiber (August 1952) of the 1986 gold-VAT trial.
