Joan Ryan was the Labour Party member of Parliament for Enfield North between 1997 and 2010. In the 2010 election however, Ryan failed to be re-elected following the expenses scandal which saw her ordered to repay some £5,000 in mortgage interest which she had 'overclaimed'. She had also claimed more than £4,500 for work on her home, including fence repairs, cleaning the back garden and redecorating her living room. [1]

Having lost her constituency battle in 2010, Ryan was given a payoff of £50,517. Despite this, she has been recalled by the party to stand for the Enfield North seat in the upcoming 2015 general election. [2]
