The German Defence League (GDL) was founded on 3 February 2010. Its slogan is 'Maximum Resistance'.
According to research by British organisation Hope Not Hate, the GDL 'boasts ten Divisions, with the most active in Hannover' but 'many of the others appear to be little more than Facebook groups'.[1]
Representatives of the GDL have reportedly attended demonstrations organised by other national defence leagues in Europe, including:
- a Dutch Defence League (DDL) rally in Amsterdam on 30 October 2010[1]
- an English Defence League (EDL) rally in Luton on 5 February 2011[1]
- the attempt to re-launch the European Defence League in Ärhus on 31 March 2012[1]
Hope Not Hate states that the GDL was the only national defence league to arrange a coach for its supporters to attend the Ärhus event.[1]
