John Woodrow
Major-General John Woodrow, MBE, (1919-1988) was Director of Army Security from 1973 to 1978.[1]
Albert John Woodrow was born at Nottingham on June 3, 1919 and educated at High Storrs and Sheffield University.[2]
He was commissioned into the Royal Signals in 1940. He served in North-West Europe and in Burma during the war, when he was mentioned in despatches. After the war he became a member of the British Services Mission to Burma. In 1949 he and his family were captured by the Karen rebels and held for several weeks. After their release they returned to England and he was made an MBE.[3]
Woodrow later served with the Canadian Army, at Rivers, Manitoba, and with the British Army on the Rhine. He commanded 1st Division Signals Regiment from 1961 until 1963, when he went as a member of the British Army Staff in Washington. In 1965 he returned to the UKto command the Training Brigade Royal Signals at Catterick.[4]
From 1968 to 1970 he was Army Director of Public Relations, and from 1970-3 General officer Commanding Wales. He was Colonel Commandant of the Royal Corps of Signals from 1970 until 1977.[5]
