(Donald) Leonard Beaton (20 June 1929 - 9 June 1971) was a Guardian journalist who wrote about nuclear disarmament and held several appointments at military think-tanks. He co-authored The Spread of Nuclear Weapons, which was the first serious book-length study of nuclear proliferation. In 1963 he became the first designated director of studies at the Institute for Strategic Studies and after two years he gave up the post to become a senior research associate to concentrate on his own work.[1] Between 1966 and 1969 he was editor of the imperialist think-tank the Round Table. He prepared and wrote the script for a major television series on strategy and disarmament, The Struggle for Peace which was broadcast in the US and Britain.[2]
